From the climatic point of view, 2008 took us back to the seventies with a very rainy spring and summer which made the management of the vineyards decidedly difficult. Only thanks to the generous months of August, September and October were the grapes able to complete the ripening process in the best manner. The vintage 2008 undoubtedly rewarded the zones best suited to the cultivation of vines, and particularly those who invested in meticulous vine cultivation operations just at the right time.
Harvest
September 20-29
Vinification
Each vineyard was vinified separately. After destemming and light crushing, must is "sealed" with CO2 for gentle warm maceration of approximately a day. Alcoholic fermentation begins about 24-36 hours later from native wild yeasts only.
Maceration: Gentle maceration in upright open-top steel tanks for the first 5-6 days of the alcoholic fermentation
Malo-lactic Fermentation: In steel, immediately following alcoholic fermentation
Alcohlic Fermentation: 14-20 Days
Aging: In steel until July of the year following harvest. 2 months in bottle before release.

Wine Advocate: 88+ points. #185, Oct 2009 The 2008 Dolcetto d'Alba is a pretty, mid-weight offering with attractive dark fruit, licorice, spices and a characteristic slightly bitter (but not unpleasant) note on the finish. Like so many Dolcettos in 2008, a measure of concentration that this wine usually shows is missing. Still, this is one of the more polished, refined Dolcettos of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2011. Luciano Sandrone's entry-level wines show all the class and elegance that are the hallmarks of this producer's house style.
IWC: 89 points. Nov/Dec 09 Bright, deep red-ruby. Lovely lift to the pure aromas of blackberry, violet and mint. Juicy, minty and tightly wound, displaying terrific freshness, focus and cut. Finishes clean and long. This may well merit an outstanding rating in a year or so.
