Antonio Galloni, writing in the Wine Advocate, gives glowing reviews to our three non-Barolo wines, saying: "This is a gorgeous set of entry-level wines from Luciano Sandrone that speak to the estate’s unwavering commitment to quality throughout the range. These are fabulous wines that make a great introduction to the work of one of Piedmont’s leading estates."
2009 Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d'Alba: 92 points "The 2009 Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore is striking. It flows from the glass with sweet red fruits, flowers, spices and herbs in a very representative expression of this site. This is a gorgeous, poised Nebbiolo with wonderful mid-palate sweetness and fabulous overall balance. A clean, saline finish gives the wine its focus and proportion on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2019."
2009 Barbera d'Alba: 90 points "The 2009 Barbera d’Alba impresses for its silkiness, finesse and sheer harmony. This is a mid-weight vintage for the Barbera, but here, too, the wine’s balance is totally irresistible. This shows lovely mid-palate pliancy in a feminine style that is incredibly appealing. Sweet dark cherries, flowers and subtle hints of French oak linger on the polished, impeccable finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016." 2010 Dolcetto d'Alba: 90 points "The 2010 Dolcetto d’Alba is a beautifully articulated, vibrant wine loaded with varietal character. In keeping with the personality of the year, this is less fruit driven than many other recent vintages, but that is actually a plus here given the low yields that inform the estate’s wines. The Dolcetto shows terrific intensity and verve from start to finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016."

The article, entitled "Beyond Barolo and Barbaresco - Nebbiolo out of the Spotlight" features wines from Roero and Valtellina as well as the little-known areas of Ghemme, Lessone, Gattinara and Colline Novaresi (all in north-central Piedmont). A rough translation for the 2007 Sandrone Valmaggiore tasting note reads: "A floral nose with light tones of berries and a hint of white pepper, with a bit of licorice. Tight and firm in the taste with a "black core" and a bit of tobacco in the back, but also juicy with a nice refreshingly clean acidic finish. Undisguised Nebbiolo."

Alessandro Masnaghetti calls the 2007 Barolo the "Finest of the New Millenium" and Rates the two Sandrone Barolo near the top - giving the Le Vigne a slight edge of the two bottlings. Andrea awarded 88 to the Cannubi and 88+ to the Le Vigne. For context, the highest score awarded was a pair of 92s. Thanks Alessandro for your continuing support of our efforts!
Antonio Galloni revisits the 2000 Piedmont vintage

Checking In On Piedmont's 2000 Vintage
Piedmont’s 2000 vintage attracted considerable attention early on. I was living in Italy at the time and...
Piedmont’s 2000 vintage attracted considerable attention early on. I was living in Italy at the time and visiting the region frequently. I still remember the buzz the vintage was generating, even before the wines had been bottled. I began tasting the wines from barrel around 2002. At that time the wines were already open, radiant, and frankly delicious. It was clearly an anomalous vintage. Personally, I had always preferred the 1999s to the 2000s and dedicated an early issue of The Piedmont Report to that vintage. But there was no denying 2000 was a very consistent year across the board, even if it lacked the visceral thrill of a truly great Piedmontese vintage. Over the years I have been surprised to see some wines evolve faster than expected. This series of tastings provided a great opportunity to get a broad and deep look at the 2000s. Unless noted otherwise, I tasted most of these wines from producers’ cellars in November 2010. I then re-tasted a number of wines from my cellar in January and February 2011. A handful of wines were tasted from magnum, where that was the only format available. I have noted all wines tasted from larger formats.
The 2000 vintage was defined by very hot, dry weather during the entire year, leading up to the harvest, which was also carried out under warmer than usual temperatures. A hot summer is not necessarily a bad thing for Nebbiolo, which can be a tricky grape to ripen. But, as the old saying goes, it is the last month of the growing season that makes the harvest. For Nebbiolo in particular, the last month is critical as the grape needs the influence of cool nights to develop its aromatic profile and color. In a perfect world, cool September nights extend the growing season into October which also allows for full phenolic ripeness of the seeds and stems. In 2000 that was not the case. The grapes ripened quickly, especially at the end of the season, when sugars climbed rapidly. The harvest took place under calm circumstances, with no rain but under high temperatures. Growers talked about harvesting in shorts and t-shirts.
I found a number of wines with aromas and flavors that are already quite forward. The wines have enough density of fruit to hang on for some time, but they won’t improve. Part of the issue comes to a central question; what exactly defines a great Piedmont vintage? Most Piedmont lovers have a preference for ‘classic’ years,’ which usually means colder vintages that yielded firm, structured wines, such as 1978, 1996, 1989 and in more recent times 1999 and 2001. As great as the best wines are from those years, there can be no denying that the best examples from warmer, atypical years such as 1985 and 1990, have also aged quite well. The problem with the 2000s is that most of them aren’t going to even be around at age 20-25. As time passes, it becomes clearer that 2000 is not a great vintage, ‘classic’ or otherwise. It is a good to excellent vintage with a handful of overachievers. The vast majority of the wines need to be enjoyed over the next few years.
The 2000 Barolo Cannubi Boschis shows early signs of maturity in its autumn leaves, leather and spices. There is an attractive silkiness to the fruit, but ultimately the 2000 comes across as a bit two-dimensional, especially in context with some of the truly great vintages. The wine does freshen up a touch in the glass, not enough to make a material difference. Ideally the 2000 is best enjoyed over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018. 92 points, tasted November 2010
2000 Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne
The 2000 Barolo Le Vigne is made from parcels across multiple vineyards, which is always an advantage in challenging vintages. The 2000 Le Vigne is fresher and more delineated than the Cannubi Boschis, although it lacks that wine’s sheer pedigree. Pretty floral notes are woven into a textured fabric of red fruit and spices. There is just enough freshness for this to continue to drink well for a handful of years. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018. 93 points, tasted November 2010
I can still remember tasting Luciano Sandrone’s 2000 Baroli when they were young. The wines were unusually soft, seamless and pleasurable. Today Sandrone’s 2000s are more advanced than I had hoped or expected, which is somewhat of a disappointment as I own bottles of the 2000 Cannubi Boschis. I also own bottles of older vintages going back to 1988, and it is pretty clear the 2000 falls short of the standard this winery established in its truly great vintages, both before and after.

2007 Barolo Cannubi Boschis: 97 points "This is very tannic and mouth puckering, with coffee and berry character but turns a little bitter. Full bodied, blockbuster style of Barolo. Massive. Give it five years. Wait until 2016."
2007 Barolo Le Vigne: 96 points "Blueberries, flowers and raspberries on the nose. Full bodied, with velvety tannins and a long caressing finish. Lots of toasted oak. Impressive intensity and richness to this. Best after 2015. But so wonderful now."

Antonio Galloni, who covers Italy for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, has released his reviews of the 2007 Barolo vintage. In the accompanying article, he writes: "The 2007 Baroli are some of the most viscerally thrilling young wines I have ever tasted. The 2007s are similar to the 2004s, but with more substance. The wines are radiant, intensely perfumed and totally seductive, yet not at all heavy, in a style that offers the textural richness of a warm vintage with the aromatics of a cool year. In 2006 and 2007 readers will find the finest back to back Barolo vintages since 1989 and 1990."
We at the winery are honored and humbled by Antonio's assessment of our wines, and we believe this reflects the care and hard work that go into the bottle. Antonio wrote about the winery: "Luciano Sandrone's wines have never been more elegant than they are today. The French oak is increasingly well balanced, and the at times excessive heaviness of some prior vintages is long gone. Simply put, Luciano Sandrone is at the top of his game. Never one to be satisfied, this year Sandrone showed me a number of experimental wines, including a barrel sample of 2009 Cannubi Boschis vinified with 100% stems, an approach that is virtually unheard of in Piedmont. Although this wine will ultimately be blended into the Cannubi Boschis, the all-stems Barolo was huge, explosive and totally compelling. Sandrone fans have much to look forward to, as the 2008s and 2009s appear quite promising at this admittedly early stage. As for the 2007s, they are off the charts."
Cannubi Boschis 2007: 97 points. "The 2007 Barolo Cannubi Boschis dazzles from start to finish. It shows marvelous delineation and freshness in its voluptuous, harmonious fruit, with no hard edges and an expansive, textured personality that conquers both the palate and intellect. Here, too, the oak is very well integrated, while the wine's balance and overall sense of harmony are nothing short of stunning. This is one of the very finest vintages of Cannubi Boschis. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032."
Le Vigne 2007: 96 Points. "The 2007 Barolo Le Vigne presents a beguiling combination of explosive, ripe fruit and finessed silky tannins that make it a thrilling wine to taste, even at this stage in its development. Small red berries, minerals, crushed flowers, vanillin and sweet spices are woven together in a fabric of undescribable elegance. The French oak has never been better balanced, while the vibrant, crystalline finish leaves a lasting impression. The 2007 Le Vigne has all the potential to develop into a spectacular wine ... actually, it already is. This is a totally stunning bottle of Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027. "

Thanks to Søren Frank, who gave our Barolo Cannubi Boschis an excellent review in the Dec 10, 2010 Issue. A rough translation of his tasting note:
Beautiful, beautiful nose of truffles, tobacco, plums and fine berries. The fruit is juicy and sweet, but there is no evidence of oak - Sandrone employs mainly used tonneaux of double size (500 liters). Sweet, soft, round and elegant in the mouth. A genuinely feminine Barolo in the context of the 2006 vintage.
